Brick X Brick is built on the foundation of community strength. Each brick is removed by hand from the foundations of homes that are condemned, designated blight or marked for demolition in our city. Often these sites are part of larger systemic issues affecting communities across our country. Entire neighborhoods have become segregated by economy, resulting in a self perpetuating cycle of blight, crime, and a lowered tax base. This cycle results in low employment opportunity, and low property value erodes the wealth of the community residents.

Brick X Brick is the result of a senior design thesis from a BGSUGD graphic designer. Rather than working in a purely academic design vacuum, this project sought to interact with the world at large and question the ownership of community blight. All proceeds from sales go to benefit neighborhood groups and associations that are working to strengthen community and empower youth to become more resilient to the crime and despair that comes with poor economic prospects. Great care is taken to protect the natural, beautiful rustic brick patina during the cleaning process. After cleaning each brick, a single hit of nontoxic weatherproof acrylic white is added to heighten the edition engraving.

Any item sourced from the rough and tumble wild of suburban and urban sprawl comes with an unknown history. We take concerns about safety seriously, including exposure to old lead paints. Each brick is fully encased with a sealant clear coat recommended by the NY historical society for it’s superior clarity and safety. This process ensures that no matter the history of any of our bricks, our products remain safe in your home for decades to come.

Once securely sealed, our refurbished bricks are backed with cork board to protect delicate surfaces in your home.

Our edition numbering highlights the zip code of the original home and connects us back to a very human story involved in this process of reclamation. Rather than focusing on rubble, we’re moving these bricks from their current state to their desired state, transforming a story of loss into one of possibility. Your purchase is as much for a natural, beautiful design artifact as it is for this mission.

Created by hand and lovingly assembled, our packaging is a sturdy recyclable cardboard printed with nontoxic water-based acrylic inks pulled by hand. Interior packaging is hand printed and bound in renewable hemp rope. Because communities don’t end with zip codes, our boxes was created with sustainability in mind.

Our glass votives are manufacture here in the Glass City by Libbey Glass, a global leader in glass. For this inaugural run, we are offering succulents from California. Future runs making use of Succulents will rely on Bensell Greenhouse in Toledo.
Our products directly benefit the individuals living in our own city. Dollar for dollar we send these sales back into neighborhood associations and nonprofits who are the vanguard of a growing social improvement in Toledo. We thank you for your support.

International Chic with a Québécois Touch.

After years of practice, Romy has found that gently taming and suggesting shape yields the most elegant results. Even when she started small with wallets back in 1987, she always matched her meticulousness with curiosity. Travelling around the globe, she has studied various techniques and designs that have helped her cultivate a singular yet international style. Today, she has a few apprentices of her own and spends most of her time crafting with them in her Montréal studio. She still makes time to learn new techniques and exhibits at tradeshows all around the world.
